Neo Geo AES

History

Released by SNK in Japan in 1990, the Neo Geo AES (Advanced Entertainment System) was the home version of the Neo Geo MVS arcade hardware. Unlike traditional consoles, it offered almost identical arcade technology at home, with large cartridges and highly accurate arcade conversions. It was also released in North America and Europe, but its extremely high console and game prices made it a niche product aimed at dedicated enthusiasts.

The system was built around a Motorola 68000 CPU running at 12 MHz, supported by a Zilog Z80 audio CPU, with graphics hardware designed for large numbers of sprites, smooth scrolling and detailed animations. Cartridge storage allowed games to be much larger than those found on competing systems, with later titles reaching hundreds of megabits. Audio was handled by the Yamaha YM2610 chip, combining FM synthesis and ADPCM samples.

Sales are generally estimated at around one million AES units, while the arcade MVS platform achieved much wider distribution. The Neo Geo AES remains a legendary console among arcade fans, with a library defined by titles such as Metal Slug, The King of Fighters ’98, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Fatal Fury Special, Samurai Shodown II, Art of Fighting, Windjammers and Last Blade.
