British cyberpunk beneath a steel sky

Beneath a Steel Sky is one of the defining European graphic adventures of the 1990s. Released in 1994 by Revolution Software, it places the player in a dystopian society shaped by social control, surveillance, artificial intelligence and deep inequality. Robert Foster is taken from his life in the Gap and forced back into Union City, an oppressive metropolis literally built beneath a steel sky.

Revolution, Dave Gibbons and Virtual Theatre

The game was created in collaboration with Dave Gibbons, the comic artist also known for Watchmen. His visual contribution gives Beneath a Steel Sky a strong identity, somewhere between comic book science fiction, social satire and classic point and click adventure. Technically, the game uses Revolution’s Virtual Theatre engine, already introduced in Lure of the Temptress, to build environments that feel more dynamic and inhabited than many static adventure screens of the period.

Beneath a Steel Sky still has a clear personality: sharp, darkly funny, political enough to matter and supported by a coherent world.
